Film Screening: THE KING OF KONG

June 3, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

THE KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS is coming to Durham for a one-night-only screening at the Full Frame Theater at the American Tobacco Campus! This screening is part of Full Frame’s Third Friday Film Series, a program of The Full Frame Road Show presented by PNC. Third Friday screenings are free and open to the public, but attendees must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite starting at 9am on the morning of the screening to attend. Seating is limited. There will be a last minute line at the venue to accommodate any last minute cancellations/no-shows.

A cult of personality surrounds Billy Mitchell, a boastful hot sauce mogul who was named Video Game Player of the Century in 1999. Mitchell has held the Donkey Kong high score since the 1980s, and basks in his status as a video game legend. Enter Steve Wiebe, a classic underdog nice guy, a science teacher and family man who sets out in 2003 to beat Mitchell’s record. Battling bureaucracy, suspicions, and self-doubt, Wiebe travels across the country to prove to the gaming world—and himself—that he’s got what it takes to be a champion. Funny, infuriating, and at times surprisingly poignant, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters pits Wiebe versus Mitchell in a fierce rivalry that showcases the diehard obsession behind a peculiar subculture.
