The debut issue of Document, our regular print (and now online) publication, came out 15 years ago as we celebrated our 10th Anniversary. A sampling of Vol. 1, No. 1, provides a telling snapshot of CDS’s evolution and staying power: the inauguration of the Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professorship in Documentary Studies and American Studies, a program that has welcomed to the Duke and UNC–Chapel Hill campuses visiting artists and scholars such as historian and photographer Deborah Willis, writer Allan Gurganus, poet Natasha Trethewey, and just this past year, filmmaker Marco Williams; a new imprint to publish the best and most creative works of documentary art, the success of which is amply illustrated by our full catalogue at CDSBooks.org; the launch of an undergraduate Certificate in Documentary Studies program (check out our 2015 graduates and their final projects); the third annual DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival, a CDS program that went on to become the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, one of the world’s premier nonfiction-cinema showcases.
And Document itself? The look has morphed over the years but the aim is the same—to share some of the best documentary work we produce and support. Enjoy online versions of our two most recent editions—a special 25th Anniversary issue and the current Spring/Summer 2015 issue.
