Since its creation, the South In Black & White has become a hallmark course of the Center for Documentary Studies undergraduate education program. Taught by author, scholar, and activist Tim Tyson with assistance from gospel singer and scholar Mary D. Williams, the course explores the South through the lens of culture, art, and history, with an emphasis on the documentary tradition.

Combining a focused, deep dive into specific histories, an emphasis on cultivating cultural understanding, and harnessing the primary-source power of the documentary tradition, the South In Black & White course both synthesizes and sheds light on many priorities held by the Center for Documentary Studies as a whole. Here, Tim Tyson explains further the content and aims of the course.
